Our Story

A Century of Passion, Rooted in Monferrato

The story of the Barbero family began long before the winery itself. Nearly a century ago, our great-grandfather was already cultivating vineyards across the hills of Monferrato, caring for the land with dedication even before wine became the family’s profession.

The next generation transformed that heritage into a vision. In 1948, Luigi Barbero officially founded the winery, beginning to produce wine that he personally delivered in traditional demijohns to the markets of Turin and Milan. Built on trust, authenticity and hard work, those first journeys laid the foundations of everything we are today.

Over the decades, the winery has grown while remaining true to its origins. Today, the third generation proudly continues this legacy. Piero oversees the vineyards and cellar, Bruna manages the administration, while Paolo and Carlo lead the winery toward new international markets, bringing the same family values to wine lovers around the world.

Our vineyards now extend across the hills of Calosso, Moasca, Boglietto and San Marzano Oliveto, where different soils, elevations and exposures allow each grape variety to express its full potential. Every vineyard is cultivated with respect for nature, harvested by hand, and vinified with the same care that has guided our family for generations.

Almost one hundred years after the first vines were tended by our family, our mission remains unchanged: to craft authentic wines that tell the story of our land, our family and the enduring spirit of Monferrato.

Calosso

For generations, our family has cultivated the rolling hills of Calosso, in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Monferrato landscape. Here, every vineyard tells a different story. Changes in altitude, exposure and soil composition create countless microclimates, allowing each grape variety to thrive where nature intended it to.

Rather than adapting the land to our vineyards, we have always adapted our vineyards to the land. Barbera flourishes on the warmest, sun-drenched slopes, while varieties such as Moscato and Traminer benefit from cooler sites where fresh breezes preserve their delicate aromas. Every planting decision is guided by decades of observation and by a profound respect for the unique character of each parcel.

The soils of Calosso are shaped by ancient marine sediments, where layers of clay, limestone and marl coexist in remarkable balance. These geological characteristics naturally regulate water availability, encourage deep root systems and contribute to the elegance, freshness and complexity that define our wines. It is a richness that cannot be recreated—it can only be understood and respected.

Throughout the growing season, every vineyard is cared for individually. Hand pruning, careful canopy management and manual harvesting allow us to respond to the needs of each vine without compromising its natural balance. We believe that great wine is not created through excessive intervention, but through attentive observation and patient stewardship.

In the cellar, our philosophy remains the same. Technology supports precision, but never replaces the identity of the fruit. Our role is simply to preserve what the vineyards have already expressed, allowing every bottle to become the most authentic reflection of Calosso and the surrounding hills of Monferrato.
